Brutal Facts of the 2005 Canadian Seal Hunt

In March and April of this year over 300,000 seals were brutally slaughtered in Canada’s cruel hunt, confirming its reputation as the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Thousands more washed up on the beaches of Newfoundland. Of the dead, 98.5% were seals three months or younger.

Appalled by these numbers and on-ice reports of animal rights organizations, people worldwide are committing to help put an end to this cruel and bloody hunt by joining a boycott of Canadian seafood. A number of restaurants and retailers like Whole Foods Market and Legal Sea Foods have already joined the boycott. Despite this, Red Lobster restaurant chain, which buys more Canadian seafood than any other U.S. wholesale customer, has so far refused to join the boycott. Find out what you can do to help convince Red Lobster to change their mind.

Ask Red Lobster to stop buying Canadian seafood

Red Lobster is America's No. 1 seafood chain with more than 600 restaurants in the United States. Darden Restaurants, the multi-billion-dollar company that owns Red Lobster, buys millions of dollars' worth of seafood each year from Canadian fishermen, including the same people who club baby seals to death.

These fishermen make the vast majority of their income from fishing, not sealing. The export of Canadian seafood such as snow crabs to the United States contribute Can$3 billion annually to the Canadian economy. In contrast, the seal hunt provides only a fraction of this, approximately $16 million, to Canada’s economy. By boycotting Canadian seafood Red Lobster has tremendous power to directly pressure the very people who kill the seals. Please take action today and urge Red Lobster to stop importing Canadian seafood!

Ask Red Lobster President Kim Lopdrup to help end the Canadian commercial seal hunt by joining the boycott of Canadian seafood. Say that you are saving your business for restaurants and retailers like Legal Sea Foods, Down East Seafood, Whole Foods Market and many others that have already joined the boycott.
